Admissions standards at Eastern Michigan University

Applicants Coming Directly from High School to EMU

EMU admits students on a sliding scale based primarily on high school grade point average and standardized test score (ACT or SAT).  That is, students with high GPAs may be admitted even if their test score is below our average. And if a student has a high test score, they may be admitted with a lower-than-average GPA. EMU does not consider the writing portion of the ACT in our admissions process. We admit students on a rolling basis, typically within 2-4 weeks of the time we receive all of a student's admissions documents.

The average student coming to EMU directly from high school has a GPA above a 3.00 and an ACT score above 20.  This is not the minimum needed for admission to EMU, but the median score of the average student at Eastern Michigan University.

If you'd like to talk with an admissions adviser about your particular situation, you can find their e-mail addresses on the Web or call 1-800-GO-TO-EMU.

Honors College Applicants

If you are entering the Honors College at Eastern Michigan University just out of high school, admission standards work on a sliding scale. For example, a high school GPA of 3.7 (on a 4.0 scale) requires a score of 25 on the ACT (plus teacher recommendations), while a high school GPA of 3.9 requires an ACT score of 23 for admission. Contact the Honors office for more specific information. Transfer and second bachelors students need a college GPA of at least 3.3 (with 15 or more credit hours) and recommendations for admission.

Graduate School Applicants

Admissions standards, including minimum GPA and GRE or GMAT scores, vary among programs in the Graduate School at Eastern Michigan Univeristy.  Check out the many graduate programs at EMU to learn more about the expectations for admission before applying.

Transfer Applicants

The minimum admission requirements for transfer students are an overall grade point average of a 2.00 and 12 college level transferrable credits. Transfer students are also required to submit official transcripts from every college or university the student has attended.  For more information, visit our Transfer Services FAQ webpage.  The Office of Transfer Services is an outstanding resource for students seeking to transfer to EMU!

International Students

International students are not required to take the ACT or SAT.  EMU does require an English proficiency test if English is not your first language.  Check out the International Admissions website for more information.
