Applying for admission to Eastern Michigan University
The first step for any student applying to Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is to fill out an application for admission and pay the application processing fee. We encourage students to apply online or in-person at the EMU Admissions Office. If you prefer to use a paper application, you may print one from our Admissions website or call 1-800-GO-TO-EMU (1-800-468-6368) and request to have an application mailed to you.
Online and in-person applications are charged a discounted application fee - $20 for undergraduate applicants and $25 for graduate applicants. The online application fee must be paid with a credit or debit card at the time your application is submitted. If you submit an application by mail, the application processing fee is $30 for undergraduates and $35 for graduate applicants, and may be paid by check or money order. Applicants with demonstrated financial need, as defined by the U.S. government, may qualify for a waiver of the application fee. Contact the Admissions Office for details.
If you are applying to EMU directly out of high school, please also submit an official high school transcript and official scores from the ACT or SAT. High school students may apply for admission at any time during their senior year. We accept all courses required by your high school to meet the standards for a diploma. EMU also operates on rolling admissions, so the sooner you apply, the sooner you'll hear a decision from us! If your test score or Grade Point Average improves, please send your new scores to our Admissions office and we will re-evaluate your application at no additional cost. Typically, students are notified of their admission decision within 2-4 weeks of the time they submit their application materials.
If you have attended another college or university, but do not have a bachelor's degree, please apply as a transfer student. You will be asked to submit official transcripts from every college or university ever attended. All transfer students must have a cumulative college grade point average of 2.0 or higher to be considered for admission to EMU. If you have fewer than 12 transferrable credits, you will also have to submit an official high school transcript or GED score report and ACT or SAT scores. For more information, please visit our Transfer Services website.
If you have a bachelor's degree already, and want to do additional undergraduate work, such as a second bachelor's degree, please complete an Application for Undergraduate Admission and submit official transcripts from every college or university ever attended. Admission to the Post-Bachelor's Teacher Certification program requires several documents in addition to the Undergraduate Application. Prospective teacher certification applicants are required to attend a group advising session to learn more about these requirements.
Admission requirements for graduate degree programs vary widely. All graduate programs require students to submit an Application for Graduate Admission (online or paper version) and official college transcripts. If you have a bachelor's degree and are seeking a more advanced degree, please visit the Graduate program website for your intended field of study or consult our Graduate Catalog for additional admission requirements specific to your program.
Students with international citizenship or academic credentials from outside the United States should apply as International Students. In addition to the Undergraduate or Graduate application, International students should follow the Admissions Checklist for Undergraduate or Graduate international applicants.
